Multi-step forms convert 38–62% better than single-page forms with exactly the same fields — but only if you split them properly. A two-step form (email first, everything else second) often converts *worse* than one page.

The reason is completion bias: people finish what they start, and a progress bar sitting at 30% raises the cost of walking away. Two steps register as friction without ever triggering that pull. Below eight fields, a single page wins outright. One HR software company split an 11-field demo request into four steps, made the phone number optional, and started the progress bar at 20% instead of zero — completion went from 4.1% to 6.0%, a 47% lift, with no fields removed.

Why it matters: the standard advice is "shorten the form," but on a qualifying form the pacing of the ask matters more than the field count. Split into three or four logical steps, or don't split at all.
